F. YELIN analysis. The oxygen uptake procedure (1) is based on volumetric measurements of the rate at which oxygen combines with a polymer under isothermal conditions. Either the time required for consumption of a specified amount of oxygen may be measured or the extrapolated induction period obtained. The induction period or oxidative induction time is characteristic of the reaction of polyenes under these conditions.
Here, subcell is employed as defined by Vand (13). The polymorphism observed both in this work and by Gray (2) is in agreement with an n-alkane arrangement of the tails. For lower carbon numbers of the series, below octyl, the entropy differences between orthorhombic and triclinic arrangements is small, and either form may dominate depending on the conditions of recrystallization. This polymorphic behavior has been reported by Larsson for the glycerides where n-alkane packing is recognized (14).
