The Syndyasmian7 Family. Morgan noted that many of the "more advanced" tribes of the state of savagery had begun to restrain their polygamous tendencies as the husband began to recognize one of a number of his wives as the principal one. Eventually (in the stage of barbarism) the marriage of single pairs was usual and the Syndyasmian family was created. This was not yet the true monogamy of civilization, for the obligations of husband and wife were not strictly observed and, as was characteristic of the American Indians, they were both quite free to divorce and seek new mates.
